Is this Fall or is it Winter??? Assuming it is still Fall, there’s lots to report to our Groton Auxiliary members about past, present and future news and events. Bookstore Closed for Renovations – Under the great leadership of Linda Hardie, our Bookstore Manager, the place will be beautifully refurbished in the next few weeks. Linda successfully negotiated the purchase of bookshelves from Borders Books when they closed the Waterford store. Child and Family will install new floors and paint the shop. Volunteers are packing up the books to be stored while the work is being done and will be back to unpack and re-shelve when the work is complete. Fall Luncheon a Great Success – Close to 50 members and guests attended our fall luncheon at the Steak Loft in Mystic. Co-Chairs Carole Mackin and Val Lewis led the meeting during which we elected our 2011-12 slate of officers and welcomed Jen Messina director of our B.P. Learned Mission who gave us an enthusiastic report on the activities of this incredible long-standing after-school program in New London. Judy Lovelace also spoke and announced her upcoming retirement to the dismay of us all. More about Judy in the next Newsletter. Welcome to New Members!!!

Upcoming Events – Hold onto your hats! We have a full calendar of Groton Auxiliary events this fall. For openers we will take an all-day bus trip to the Newport Playhouse & Cabaret Restaurant on Tuesday, November 29 where we will enjoy a delicious buffet luncheon and a live theater performance followed by a cabaret show featuring holiday music. The comedy, “Never Get Smart with an Angel”, promises to entertain. You should have received the invitation recently but can still call Debbie Pettini at 860-449-0830 to reserve your seat. Then on Sunday, December 4 we will hold our Annual Holiday Party from 5-7 at the Mystic Arts Center. The change of venue is due to renovation work being done at the Yacht Club. The Arts Center is graciously renting its beautiful main gallery to us at a very reduced rate, and we will have the opportunity to enjoy its annual arts and crafts sale taking place in the lower galleries. Finally, look for the Polar Express appeal in your mailbox soon. Ginny Ager and Jean Baruffa are preparing for the annual shopping trip to provide needy families with holiday gifts.
