Health & Social Services
School-Based and School-Linked Health Centers
Child
and Family Agency operates 16 full-service model centers in all of New
London's public schools, 5 Groton schools (Fitch HS, Fitch Middle, West
Side MS, Claude Chester and Catherine Kolnaski) and 3 Norwich schools (NFA,
Kelly MS, and Greeneville Elementary), and The Friendship School in
Waterford. The center at Teachers' Memorial Middle School in Norwich
provides medical services only. These centers are funded by State
Legislature through Department of Public Health grants, the United Way
and by insurance reimbursements. With parental permission, students in
these schools can obtain services such as physicals, minor acute illness
care, health promotion and disease prevention education, as well as
group, individual and/or family therapy. These centers are
licensed by DPH as Outpatient Clinics and are staffed by certified nurse
practitioners and masters-prepared mental health clinicians.
Children in the Agency's child care centers, the Dual Language Arts
Academy, and the B. P. Learned Mission have access to medical services
through school-linked centers.
Young Parents Program
Child and Family Agency assists pregnant and parenting teens living
in New London and Groton. The goal is to assist these
young women in accessing the community resources necessary to ensure a
healthy birth outcome, teach positive parenting
skills, and encourage avoidance of a subsequent unintended pregnancy.
This work is made possible through a grant from the Department of Public
Health, the United Way of SE CT. and auxiliary fundraising.
